The fine print
- What this compares. Your current average power bill of $315 a month against your solar payment of $266 a month, over 25 years. Utility escalated at 7.5% per year, solar at 2.99% per year.
- Still connected to the grid. You are still connected to the utility grid and would be expected to pay a small fixed monthly rate, considered the standard connection fee.
- Appalachian Power rates are moving. Appalachian Power's West Virginia rates keep moving. The company and Wheeling Power asked the Public Service Commission for a $250.5 million base rate increase, about 15 to 16 percent, and in September 2025 the Commission granted only about $76 million of it. A settled 4 percent base rate increase then took effect June 1, 2026, adding about $4.84 a month for a home using 1,000 kWh, and as part of that deal the company agreed not to file another base rate case before June 1, 2027. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
